Will Thornbury interviewed Dick Bock initially in 1963 and again in 1984 as part of his ongoing documentation of jazz on the West Coast. The interviews covered a wide range of topics regarding Bock's Pacific Jazz and World Pacific years. When Bock sold the company to Liberty he was kept on as a producer.

Bock recalled that he was given a budget with an allocation of money to produce sessions plus an expectation of sales generated from this activity. He was told that his sales goal was two million dollars for a particular year. Bock related to Thornbury that the best sales year that he ever achieved when he was sole owner of Pacific Jazz was $750,000.00. Now his employer wanted him to produce three times that amount.

The albums covered in this segment as well as albums in previous segments document Bock's attempt to boost sales via pop oriented material using front line jazz musicians like Bud Shank, Chet Baker, and Joe Pass; along with arrangers Bob Florence, George Tipton, and Jack Nietzsche. Bock told Thornbury that the amicable relationship he had with Herb Alpert went south after he produced the knock off albums with Chet Baker and the Mariachi Brass.
