FOUR RETAIL SAMPLERS

A previous post examined four sample albums, two aimed at the jazz record buying public and two "not for sale" samplers for radio DJ use. The four sample albums/sets examined below were also manufactured for the retail market.
ON MIKE, PJ-100, was reviewed in the December 22, 1962 issue of Billboard magazine. It presented a selection of jazz that had been issued by the label during its first ten years of operation.
Dick Bock sold Pacific Jazz / World Pacific to Liberty Records in 1965. Shortly after acquiring Pacific Jazz / World Pacific, Liberty purchased Blue Note Records from Alfred Lion. Bock remained with Liberty and continued to oversee jazz releases for Liberty. A WORLD OF JAZZ, Liberty B2S-5256, featured selections from the Pacific Jazz and Blue Note catalogues.
In the late 1960s United Artists, whose parent company was TransAmerica, bought Liberty Records and all of its subsidiary labels which at the time were Imperial, Aladdin, Blue Note and Pacific Jazz. Bock produced a 2 LP set that featured some of the artists that he promoted for Liberty, WORLD PACIFIC JAZZ PRESENTS SHORT CUTS, ST-22200.

Radio station KBIG approached Dick Bock regarding a selection of artists for an album that would be underwritten by KBIG. Bock agreed and the resulting album, KBIG CHOICE, was released in October of 1965.
